Novomyr Logvin: I get ideas by looking at different interesting things and then dreaming about how I can translate them into jewelry

At the age of 5, he made his first piece of jewelry, a hedgehog-shaped brooch, which he cut out from a sheet of brass. Now he is 11 and comes up with all sorts of interesting ideas that he turns into jewelry. Novomyr Logvin is from Ukraine, and for the past two years, since the war started in his country, he has been living in Romania. He creates alongside his father and sells his jewelry at fairs, where he enjoys telling people how each piece was made.

„I love the magic that happens after polishing. Seeing the final shine is the best. And I’m always surprised and excited when I see my pieces on display or in photos from professional shoots with models. It’s like seeing my ideas come to life in a totally new way”, says Novomyr.

Novomyr Logvin will join the fifth edition of Romanian Jewelry Week, which takes place between 2nd and 6th of October at the National Library of Romania. In the following, we talk to him about what inspires him in the jewelry creation and we discover how he cultivates his creativity.

About you

Hello I'm Novomyr, I am 11. Originally, I’m from Kyiv, Ukraine. Because of the war in my country, 2 years ago my family and I moved to Romania.

Watching my father creating jewelry showed me that anything you dream up can be made real if you just work at it!

The moment you were attracted to jewelry

From the very first day! I was interested right away.

I felt like an adult because it wasn’t like playing with kiddy toys. I loved putting on the glasses and making a mess on the table. It made me feel like I was doing real, important work, just like my dad!

Your first piece, created at 5 years old

I remember that brooch really well. It was a hedgehog that I cut out from a sheet of brass and then tapped with a hammer. I count that as my first real piece because it was the first one that actually got sold! I really liked using the saw, and I spent a lot of time making different shapes like flowers, butterflies, letters, and even words. People really liked them, and they sold quickly at the markets. It was so fun seeing people buy what I made!

Training in jewelry creation

It was very natural for me. I just helped my dad in the workshop on weekends or after school, trying to repeat what he did.

Around that time, I also found this documentary film where blacksmiths and craftsmen were recreating famous weapons like katanas and swords. It was amazing to see how they worked with metal, and it made me think about how I could try similar things. Watching them make such detailed and powerful pieces really inspired me to keep exploring new techniques and ideas!

At Assamblage School

We got connected to Assamblage right when we arrived in Romania, and their support was a big reason we ended up here. My dad continued his work there and even taught some courses on ancient gilding techniques, so it felt natural for me to start my training at Assamblage too. I completed two steps of working with wax, which was a new material for me—softer and easier to shape than metal. My trainers, David and Andrea, showed me lots of unexpected ways to work with wax. It helped me improve a lot, and now I have so many new ideas I want to create!

Your creative process

I get ideas by looking at different interesting things and then dreaming about how I can translate them into jewelry. The hardest part is trying to make everything I’ve come up with—it doesn’t always turn out exactly how I imagined.

I love the magic that happens after polishing. Seeing the final shine is the best!

And I’m always surprised and excited when I see my pieces on display or in photos from professional shoots with models. It’s like seeing my ideas come to life in a totally new way!

What inspires you

Actually, nothing special—I just show up in the workshop, and being around the tools kind of calls me in! Creating is only about 10% of the whole process; the rest is routine work that you might not always enjoy, or things you have to struggle with and redo a few times. So, inspiration is important, but for me, it’s really about being in a good mood. Listening to my favorite music in headphones helps a lot—it keeps me going even when the work gets tough!

People who buy your creations

I love the people who buy my jewelry—they’re very artistic, brave, and creative. They choose something unique instead of just shiny things or diamonds. I really enjoy talking to clients at fairs; it’s been my favorite part since my first one. I love retelling the whole process of how each piece is made, sharing the story behind it, and seeing how much they appreciate it. It makes the whole experience even more special!

Your presence at Romanian Jewelry Week 2024

It's an incredible opportunity to be part of a creative community from all over the world. I’m really excited to meet and talk with visitors. Being around so many talented people and seeing all the different styles and ideas is super inspiring. I can’t wait to share my work and learn from others—it’s going to be amazing!

The collection you present at RJW – „Brave Idea

The „Brave Idea” collection is about the journey of an idea trying to become real. Each piece shows a thought as it starts and then grows in different directions. It’s like capturing that first moment when you imagine something, and there are so many ways it could go. The collection is all about being brave enough to explore those possibilities, even if you’re not sure where they’ll end up!

Your dream when grow up

I think I will continue to create jewelry, but I want to do it in a way that brings not only beauty and inspiration, but also benefits society and doesn’t harm nature.
